Erik Wolpaw, a long-time Valve writer who has worked on game series including Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, and Portal, revealed today that he is no longer with the company. Marc Laidlaw, himself a former Valve writer, let the news slip on Twitter, while Wolpaw confirmed it in a status update on his Facebook page.

Wolpaw joined Valve in 2004, and has credits on Half-Life: Episode One and Two, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Portal 2. Prior to that, he was with Double-Fine, where he co-wrote the outstanding platform-adventure Psychonauts, and before that he was one-half of the brilliant (and sadly defunct) gaming site Old Man Murray. He's currently involved in the development of Psychonauts 2, which was successfully crowdfunded in early 2016.

A reason for Wolpaw's departure wasn't given, but it does appear to be legitimate this time around. A report that he had left Valve also surfaced last summer, but in that case it turned out that he'd just called in sick for the day.

It's really saying something about the strength of Valve's terrific zombie shooter that it's still clawing its way to the top of lists like this one after five years. A fanatically balanced, cleverly written shooter, this game is built on the strength of four survivors working as a team, making it the iconic cooperative experience.

Valve must also get some credit for continuing to update this five-year-old game, adding level editors, Steam workshop support , porting in the maps and characters from Left 4 Dead 1, and continuing to offer “mutations,” always-changing game modes that offer something new for experienced players.

Left 4 Dead 2's active modding community is a huge part of why this game is at the top of this list. From replacement character models for Deadpool or velociraptors or campaigns exploring Lord of the Rings' Helms Deep castle , the amount of top-quality content for this game is vast.

There are a lot of different kinds of ways to play with friends represented on this list, but the carefully constructed rules that force players to help each other up or free one another from an attacking zombie create dramatic, action-movie set pieces seemingly from thin air. On top of all of it, the B-movie stylings and character voiceovers make Left 4 Dead 2 a real pleasure to play and, more importantly, to enjoy with friends.

Left 4 Dead is proof that all you need is a simple idea, a satisfying core gameplay loop and an element of chance to make something hard to put down. Although a lot of people prefer its sequel, the foundations were laid by this zombie-infested classic. The AI Director that adjusted each round’s difficulty, pacing and drama made it feel fresher than an ice bath in the Alps and it retains that distinct feel to this day.

Everyone remembers their first encounter with a Witch, hearing its cries as you and your teammates desperately shout at each other to kill your torches. The mix of infected attacking you and the location they spawn stops it feeling repetitive, and it’s all thanks to the AI Director.

Co-op games should reward teamwork and Left 4 Dead nails this by punishing lone wolfs with a speedy death. Unlike many co-op games, it works almost as well with strangers as it does with friends – jumping in with a group of random mic warriors only reinforces the apocalyptic fantasy of banding together with people you don’t know.
