BEWARE PHISHING SCAMS!

We are seeing a large increase recently in succesful phishing attempts leading to entire inventories being stolen. Please be careful and look out for users:

- Asking you to verify items, check if "depositable on x website", or use a middleman
- Stating they've reported you, worried you'll be banned, or need to confirm something with a steam admin
- Asking you to vote for their team
- Asking you to play with them on FACEIT, or a tournament, unprompted

It is generally a good idea not to follow links sent to you over steam chat / discord, but if anyone is asking you any of the above, BLOCK THEM and REPORT them to steam.

Never(!) put your username/password into a website with a steam login. Always open https://steamcommunity.com/ in a new page yourself and log in there. Then reload the page. If you see a continue button you can safely click it.

This is not limited to steam, there are many scammers impersonating well known trader profiles on discord using the same methods. If you're not sure or something feels off, you can always ask for advice on the backpack.tf forums or discord: https://discord.backpack.tf/

For steamrep tagged users

Can I appeal my steamrep/partner tag?
No, the window to appeal old tags closed in 2024 a few weeks after the announcement that steamrep was closing. However, the steamrep shutdown and closure of the API will be complete in a few weeks, at which point tags are essentially gone. Backpack.tf is no longer using the steamrep API in anticipation of this occurring. Other websites may still be using it, you'd need to check with them.

Why does backpack.tf still say I'm steamrep banned?
We are still displaying steamrep tag status in the same place as before, but it no longer auto-bans on site or prevents you using any features of the site at all. It is simply there for user information/warning.

Why does rep.tf still show me as banned on all these websites?
If rep.tf says you're banned on a site but when you go to that site it doesn't say you're banned, rep.tf probably just hasn't updated yet.

If you actually are still banned on a particular site, you need to make an appeal there. They may or may not be keeping tagged users banned. Backpack.tf is no longer auto banning but I cannot speak for any other website, you would need to check with them yourself.

Will users/bots get banned if they trade with me?
Backpack.tf will not ban people for trading with you just because you had a previous steamrep tag. However, other sites may, so you may still find users choose not to trade with you.

Why are bots refusing trades with me?
Bots may still be using the steamrep API or may be blocking all tagged users based on the steamrep data dump or backpack.tf steamrep status. You would need to take that up with the person or website running the bot, it has nothing to do with us who they choose to block.

For everyone else

Can I trade with users who previously had a steamrep tag?
As far as we're concerned, yes. Other sites may have different rules and you'd need to check that with them.

Why have you stopped banning tagged users, and why are you allowing people to trade with them?
I don't want to write an essay here, but in short; steamrep deleted all the evidence for every tag. We don't feel it's fair to keep people banned with no evidence to base those bans on, therefore we have elected to display tag status for warning/information only. Don't mistake this for us stating these users are safe to trade with - the majority of them were confirmed scammers who had their appeals declined. You should exercise caution when considering trading them, especially if the trade involves trust. I personally would not recommend cash trading anyone with a previous tag, just for your own protection.
