Remote play does not work with steam deck connected to an external screen
ISSUE
Remote play does not work when the target devise is connected to an external screen.

OS
Host: windows 11
Target: Steam OS

STEPS
1. Connect Steam Deck to TV via dock.
2. From the Library menu on Steam Deck, choose a game and initiate streaming from my another device.

RESULTS
The game launches on the host machine. On Steam Deck, there are a few seconds when remote play loading screen is shown but then I get thrown back to the library menu. Steam recognises that the game is running on the host machine, so instead of the "Stream", I get the "Connect" button. When I press it, I get the same result as when starting streaming. Whenever the deck is not connected to an external monitor it works as expected. When I run games on Steam Deck instead of streaming it also works.

EXPECTED
Streaming is successfully initiated and the game is shown on the TV screen.

I figured out it had something to do with the screen resolution. If I limit maximum streaming resolution of my client (steamdeck) to 1440p (resolution of the host), then streams work most of the time. It still won't connect for no reason from time to time but it is better than when I have 4k as my client's max resolution since in this case it never connects to the stream.

This happens to me constantly with the Deck, exactly as described. Usually I have to restart the host PC and reopen steam and it will start up, this happens maybe 75% of the time with Hogwarts Legacy in particular lately.

Thanks for sharing! I have tried your method and it works.

Here are some additional observations:
1. If Steam Deck is turned on when steam on host machine is running, remote play with external screen will not work. Restarting Steam on the host machine fixed the issue.
2. When remote play works and you disconnect Steam Deck and connect it again, remote play will stop working until you relaunch Steam on the host machine.

I hope someone will be able to figure out what exactly the cause is.

I solved it. When is SD in dock station on ethernet cable, then is SD connect via wifi and ethernet simultaneously. When you disconect one of this connection, then remote play start work.

THANK YOU, I had no clue the double connection could cause this, was losing my mind trying to isolate this, THANK YOU!!

A bit of a necro but THANK YOU for this! Been fighting my Deck for the past 2 days thinking it was an issue with resolution or something wrong with my new dock.
What a stupid thing to have both connected!
