How to make desktop streaming work?
I have the following setup:

Host

OS: Ubuntu 25.10
product: Battlemage G21 [Arc B580]
vendor: Intel Corporation
configuration: depth=32 driver=xe latency=0 resolution=2560,1440

Client

OS: Ubuntu 25.10
description: VGA compatible controller
product: HD Graphics 620
vendor: Intel Corporation
configuration: depth=32 driver=i915 latency=0 resolution=1920,1080

Issue

When I connect the client with the host, the streaming screen is black. When I move the mouse around I can see that the host is reacting to it, as elements and controls in Steam gets highlighted.
This makes it nigh impossible to start a game using Remote Play.

Workaround

If I start the game on the host before connecting the client, Remote Play works very well when I do connect the client to the host.

Question

How can I make Remote Play desktop Streaming work so I can control Steam on the host without having to physically "pre"-launch a game?

is steam on host set to change the res to match the client?

what os is the client pc?
on the client, is it set to start in bpm or desktop mode?
try the link app for windows/linux/mac

steam link forum, subforums for device/os types, sticky thread has links to steam link app installers

Sorry about the missing OS info, I have updated the original post.

While looking into your questions I have tried to pinpoint if there are certain settings that provoke certain behaviours.

Steam Remote Play on both computers

Test 1

Host
No changes in default settings

Client
No changes in default settings

Result
Client shows black screen with continuous blue "Trivial Pursuit" loading spinner.
No interaction possible.
Starting the game on the host before connecting makes no difference, same behaviour.

Test 2

Host
Disabled "Enable hardware encoding" in "Advanced Host Options"
No other default settings changed

Client
No changes in default settings

Result
Client shows black screen after a very brief moment of blue "Trivial Pursuit" loading spinner.
Interaction possible, but client screen still black.
Starting the game on the host before connecting makes it possible to play the game without issues.

Steam Link on client

Test 1

Host
No changes in default settings

Client
Changed Streaming quality settings to Default from 4K Streaming
No other default settings changed

Result
Client shows black screen with continuous blue "Trivial Pursuit" loading spinner.
Host starts in BPM.
No interaction possible.
Starting the game on the host before connecting makes no difference, same behaviour.

Test 2

Host
Disabled "Enable hardware encoding" in "Advanced Host Options"
No other default settings changed

Client
Changed Streaming quality settings to Default from 4K Streaming
No other default settings changed

Result
Client shows BPM launcher after a very brief moment of blue "Trivial Pursuit" loading spinner.
Interaction possible, BPM launcher fully visible.
Starting games work.
Playing games work.
Stopping games make the screen go black, I have to force quit and restart Steam Link to regain control. This workaround at least make it possible to remote control the host.

Enable hardware encoding?

Looking at the tests, "Hardware encoding" plays a vital role here. Is this something something I would benefit from figuring out how to enable without issues?

does it happen with all games or just a few?

it may just be issues with the intel arc dedicated gpu
those do not have dx9 hardware support, its driver needs the cpu to transcode dx9 to dx10-12

try looking for newer drivers, and ask in the intel arc forums
