Chat Filtering has shipped out of Steam Labs!
After nearly two months of testing, feedback, and iteration, this experiment has concluded and the Chat Filtering features now available to all Steam users.

Of the users who opted into the Labs experiment, most have chosen to keep filtering of strong language enabled. Whether or not a participant left filtering enabled, most demonstrated an interest in excluding Friends’ messages from filtering. Of those who continue to use the feature to obscure offensive language from chat, many have enabled profanity to be displayed while keeping slurs obscured, and some went out of their way to exclude Friends’ messages from filtering.

These details, when taken into account with the feedback you’ve shared with us in the Labs forums, have lead us to determine that most users do not want messages from their Friends to be filtered by Steam, so we have made our defaults reflect this preference. Our defaults are now set to filter chat messages from those you don’t know, as players of games which leverage our Chat API can then avoid harassment without taking action.

During experimentation, we also heard that you’d like user-controlled chat filtering preferences to apply across the more public communication between users, in places like store reviews, community discussions, comments, and user generated content. We tried that for a bit, but after consideration we want to keep the public areas of Steam free of inappropriate content and have changed this back to the way it was: messages posted in generally-visible areas of Steam are always filtered to exclude strong profanity and slurs.

Thanks for participating in our experiment, and do keep the feedback coming. We’re always here, and we’ll of course continue to improve Steam with your feedback.

I think shipping them may have broken them. I have it all set up not to filter anything, yet words still get filtered. I even set up words for the filter, and yet they don't get filtered. Others are saying they work just fine for them.

That out of the way, you guys were actually collecting info from what people set them to be?
Huh, I guess the "experiment" thing wasn't just a fancy little detail to set the mood with the Steam Labs.

Disappointed that it doesn't work through entire site. It's fine to enable it by default (for example, when user is not logged in, or haven't touched the settings), but why keeping filter on when user explicitly wants to disable it?

I don't think that's intentional...

Like, yeah, I'd like for it to get fixed. But that doesn't mean I'll act as if they were purposely doing it.

No, it is intentional. Quoting the post:

So current filter settings do nothing on site themselves. They work only for Steam Chat and in-game chats in supported games.

Oh...

Well this is stupid.
Guys, don't backpedal on that. The whole goal of the customizable filters was to let people take control of the words they could and couldn't see. Why should it be any different for the forums?
How are filtering discussions not working on Google Chrome but on the Steam Client?

The thing I saw complained about most was filtering in games, people liked the option to freely read the steam community pages, as this has been the first time the choice was ever given, please return this to the way it was.

It's fixed now but it seems when the option is disabled that it is still being filtered now, on certain things, like inside " ".

If someone decides to not filter certain words, they don't think it's inappropriate enough. If someone wants to filter out certain words, it's because they do consider them inappropriate, or in general they have a reason to. After giving users the freedom to choose, why do you now limit this newfound freedom to places it wasn't even thought for in the first place?

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thanks
Though it's a shame this doesn't allow you to input custom words, so it'd be best if Steam didn't exclude the forums from custom filtering.

It looks like unintended behavior, but it works perfectly fine, thank you. I really hope it won't be patched.
