It's just a way to show recognition. Just like movie and music awards. You may not always agree.

I play games based on whether I would get enjoyment from the experience.

Every game is garbage compared to Kenshi and now waiting for the sequel.

This. There've been plenty of "GotY" winners that I couldn't care less about. Doesn't mean they're necessarily bad, just that they're not my thing. (ditto with Best Picture winners and Best Album Grammies, and Best TV Show golden globes, and. . . welcome to subjective opinions of what is good or not?)

it was not a bad game, not overly wow factor more annoyance actually when you think you beat the game but there is more.

It’s just a matter of preference and especially some categories. For me personally the game was amazing and my personal GOTY.
