Publically displayed leaderboards connected to each game's Steam forums.
But THIS leader board would have to be different somehow. It would have to average many variables constantly to achieve that "top ten" or whatever number.

Things like team play.
Time of play.
Most objectives
K/D.

Something I learned while playing Battlefront 2 Star fighter assault (which is just multiplayer Rogue Squadron lets call a spade a spade here). is that if I concentrated just on objectives I might not even place on the leader board. But the team might win.

So win or loss of a WHOLE team would also have to factor into that leader board for the individual.

Glory hounds and cheaters a like would not be rewarded with there "name in lights" at THIS leaderboard. Well maybe not in the ways they would probably like to be anyway.

I have been playing video games all my life. Arcade games, console games, and now pc games. Not counting all the time I have put into programs.
Back in the 80s, on arcade games one might get lucky and get the high score. Get to put their initials in the top ten. I remember being a kid and feeling like a million dollars whenever I got to.

As if anyone at those businesses actually cared WHO was in the top 10? I never tried to figure out who checked out a library book before me looking at the stamped signets.

But what if it actually meant something? If it translated into something real and tangible... If it translated into real world savings? Cheaper light bills? Groceries? Cheaper video games? Duh!!!! etc etc etc etc

Something for the glory hounds - They get their profile spotlighted? Steam gamer of the day? Week? Month? Year? Decade(s)? I dunno

No.

Games are toxic enough when dealing with tryhards and their leaderboards in game.

Don't bring that crap into the forums.

I try hard to win, isn't that the point of playing a game? If I went back in time ito the 1980's and put a quarter in Pac-man, and then the game started. Should I just not touch the controls and let him go into a wall and just let the ghost destroy me? Even if I did my best, they would eventually get me, it would have gotten tougher and tougher, faster and faster, till it threw me off basically.

You didn't seem to actually read the OP though, I said this leaderboard would be d I f F E R e N T. Thus the motivations would be different I imagine.
Nobody is going to put a game on sale "only for people who scored well on the leaderboard". The game is either on sale or it's not.
Game devs can create Steam groups for this.

As for rewards, they can offer in game crap all they want.

:nkCool:

Oh I think they can do a lot better than that.

You suggested "cheaper light bills" which I assume means electricity?

Yeah, no. The utility company certainly doesn't care whether you're "good at" a video game when they send you your bill.

If you want free stuff, become a streamer and get sponsored. You're not going to get paid by random strangers for playing a game in private and advertising nothing to nobody. Sponsors aren't sending people racing chairs out of the goodness of their hearts.
