Balatro but with (chinese) mahjong. You don't need to know how to play mahjong the same way you don't need to know poker to play balatro; the first round is played straight, then you start playing with relics, equipment, and opponent abilities that completely change the rules.

The game starts you off with a very simple character that pretty much just plays number tiles. Very good way to ease players unfamiliar with mahjong into the game. Just find 1 through 9 and some dupes and win. There is meta progression unlocking relics/figurines/items and unlocking/upgrading characters and difficulty levels.

Familiarity with Diyu (chinese circles of Hell) and many of China's mythological demons and monsters like jiangshi would greatly help you appreciate the characters, voiceacting, and setting. Otherwise they just come across as random sassy anime girls.

The English voiceacting is hit or miss. Most are good. The jiangshi's were appropriately voiced with no emotion. The bossy sassy bdsm types played their parts well. But then there's one character that literally has a southern accent that doesn't fit the character at all. The voiceactors also don't seem to have been given direction about how to pronounce some terms, because at one point a character called mahjong "mahjing" and the pronunciation of mahjong terms were inconsistent.

Characters, art and animation are great. This isn't just some cheap asset flip.

I have rarely found a game I hate this much. I was expecting a prettier Aotenjo, and got smug, condescending anime waifus, terrible music, chinese/translated terms when I learned Japanese mahjong, and above all... it's just not fun.
